Overview
Brief History
Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, established in 2004, is Zanzibar’s only national park, covering 50 km² in the heart of Unguja Island. It was created to protect the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkey and the region’s unique coastal forest ecosystem. Managed by the Zanzibar government, the park integrates conservation with community development, supporting local villages through tourism revenue. Its proximity to Zanzibar Town makes it a popular day trip destination.
Climate and Accessibility
Located 35 km southeast of Zanzibar Town, the park is accessible by a 30-40 minute drive via paved roads. Zanzibar is reachable by flights to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport or ferries from Dar es Salaam (2 hours). The tropical climate is warm year-round (25-30°C), with dry seasons (June-October, December-February) ideal for visits. The wet seasons (March-May, November) bring 900-1,500 mm rainfall, making trails muddy but lush.
