Overview
Brief History
Nyerere National Park, established in 2019, spans 30,893 km², making it Tanzania’s largest national park. Formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, it was redesignated to honor Julius Nyerere, Tanzania’s first president. Managed by TANAPA, it protects a vast wilderness of miombo woodlands, rivers, and wetlands, home to large populations of elephants, hippos, and crocodiles.
Climate and Accessibility
Accessible by charter flights to airstrips like Mtemere or by road from Dar es Salaam (250 km, 6-7 hours). The dry season (June-October) is best for wildlife viewing, with temperatures of 20-30°C. The wet season (November-April) brings 800-1,200 mm rainfall, making some areas inaccessible but ideal for boat safaris.
