Tour overview

The fifth highest mountain in Africa and Kilimanjaro’s little brother as it is the second highest mountain in Tanzania. Mount Meru is located in Arusha and is 4566 meters high. As a Kilimanjaro’s little brother, Climbing Mount Meru you will pass different scenery from the dense montane forest through the scrubland and the Moorland and the alpine desert up to your summit. As the habitat differs as you go on the top, in the on your initial ascending time the habitat supports wildlife as you may expect to see animals like buffalo, elephants, and leopard and this is what makes the ascend to be compulsory being escorted with the armed park ranger.

The hike can be of 4days/3nights or 3days/4nights as from the below itinerary of 4 days from the 3 days Itinerary a Climber will not be having the overnight at Miriakamba Hut after the summit where she/he will trek back direct  to the Momella gate and back to Arusha town.

Day 1:Arusha - Momella Gate - Miriakamba Hut

Walking habitat: Montane Forest
Elevation: 1,500M (Momella gate) to 2,500M (Miriakamba Hut)
Hiking time: 4 hrs Momella Gate to Miriakamba hut
The morning will start with leaving Arusha town taking a drive of 2 hours reaching the Momella gate through Arusha National park gate for the formalities. Under the escort of the armed park rangers you will then start your hike for up to 2hrs to the Maio fall and ideal picnic scenery. Thereafter, hiking through the famous fig trees, getting the detailed and interesting information from the park ranger hiking up to Miriakamba where you will have your overnight stay.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2500m) - Saddle Hut (3550m)

Elevation: 2,500M (Miriakamba gate) to 3,550 (Saddle Hut)
Hiking time:4hrs Miriakamba Gate to Saddle hut
The hike will start leaving the Miriakamba hut hiking to the Mgongo wa Tembo which is the hike of 2 to 3 hours taking a rest. Taking some oxygen at Mgongo wa Tembo, you will then take a hike to the Saddle hut where you can stay for your lunch and the day camping. As you have some free time you can opt to visit a little Meru which is a hike of 1hour and 30 minutes and have an awe view of the Arusha National Park and walk back to your camping point for dinners and overnight stay.

Day 3:Summit day, Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak (4562m) then to Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

Elevation:3,550M (Saddle Hut) to 4,562M (Socialist Peak) then 2,500M (Miriakamba gate)
Hiking time:4 to 5 hrs Saddle hut to Socialist Peak then Miriakamba Gate
The day will starts in the midnight at around 0200hrs (head lumps are compulsory) taking light food such as tea and biscuits, then starts the hike to the Rhino point at 3,821Meters whereby the climb from here starts to be tough up to the summit point, here you will enjoy an awe view of the Mountain’s big brother (The Kilimanjaro Mountain) while your eyes will be also filled with the great view of the Mountain Caldera. Having such awesome moment at the Socialist peak you will then descend town to the Miriakamba hut for your meals and camping for the night.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut (2500m) - Momella Gate (1500m)
